The Endocannabinoid System

Endocannabinoid-System
As kids, we were all taught there are 11 major organ systems in the human body: the circulatory, respiratory, urinary, reproductive, integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, lymphatic, and digestive systems. Yet no one ever mentioned anything about the ECS, short for the endocannabinoid system. That’s because it was not discovered until the late ’80s, early ’90s by Scientists who were trying to understand how THC, the primary intoxicating substance in cannabis, affected the body. Thus, the name ‘endocannabinoid’ system; endo stands for endogenous, which means that it is produced naturally inside your body, while cannabinoid is the chemical messengers that activate this system. You may be thinking that because the word “cannabinoid” is being used, this system relies on the presence of cannabis (marijuana). It does not. The endocannabinoid system is present without you ever being exposed to cannabis or any extrinsic cannabis-related compounds.

The ECS is reported to help regulate
